As we usher in 2024, Syfy brings back their beloved New Year’s Eve marathon of Rod Serling’s hallmark fantasy series, The Twilight Zone. SyFy’s lineup this year presents a nice blend of beloved classics and hidden gems.

For nearly 30 years, Syfy has made it an annual tradition to keep fans glued to their screens during New Year’s Eve and Day. Get ready for the ultimate binge-watching experience with the Syfy Twilight Zone New Year’s Eve Marathon! Starting Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at 8 am ET/PT, and running until Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at 4 am ET/PT, prepare to lose track of time in the most mind-bending way possible.

The journey begins with Season 1’s “The Lonely,” a poignant tale written by Serling and directed by Jack Smight. Jack Warden stars as Corry, a convicted criminal sentenced to a lonely prison on a desert-like asteroid drifting through space. Corry’s yearning for human connection is finally fulfilled when a regular shipment of supplies from Earth brings an unexpected android named Alicia, portrayed by Jean Marsh.

The excitement only intensifies with the episode “Time Enough at Last”. It’s an iconic installment featuring Burgess Meredith (who would later appear in three more episodes) and culminating in one of the show’s most memorable endings. The marathon then continues into the early hours of Tuesday, January 2, with five hour-long episodes from Season 4: “Caesar and Me,” “The Jeopardy Room,” “The Parallel,” “I Dream of Genie,” and “No Time Like the Past.”

SyFy’s ‘The Twilight Zone’ New Year’s Eve Marathon is Part of a Greater Holiday Tradition

The Twilight Zone is a timeless delight for viewers of all ages. With its black-and-white photography, classical scoring, and absence of gore or jump scares, it offers chilling entertainment without the need for explicit language.

Of course, TV stations nationwide quickly recognized that Rod Serling’s series was perfect for holiday marathons. This tradition dates back to the ’80s. Los Angeles’s KTLA aired their inaugural The Twilight Zone marathon on Thanksgiving Day in 1980.

In an interview with the LA Times in 1991, Mark Sonnenberg, the program director at KTLA, provided insights into the series’ association with holiday marathons. “The July 4th marathon started in 1983,” he said at the time. “It’s become a Southern California tradition. It’s right up there with your other Fourth of July activities: barbecues, picnics, and fireworks.”
